December 4, 2002 Total Solar Eclipse - Both gold and silver medals were minted in South Africa and in two sizes. This is a one ounce silver medal. Proof strikes with mirror finished surfaces and frosted devices on both sides. A very limited mint run was made with gold and silver from South African mines. The dies were created by Sam Lamon of Lamon Jewelers in Musina, South Africa, a town that lay in the path of the eclipse central line. The actual sculpture work of the die was done by Linda Lotriet of Johannesburg, South Africa.
The reverse side of the medal is a close up of a Cheetah cat, with a Baobab tree in the background. The words Africlipse 2002 are inscribed in the sky above the tree and Limpopo Province in the grass next to the Cheetah.
