Etienne Leopold Trouvelot was a Frenchman (1827-1895) who came to America in 1852 as an artist with a passion for science. The Harvard College Observatory put him on staff to produce pictures of what he saw through the telescope and he produced thousands of drawings and paintings. His pictures were well respected in the astronomical community to the point that a small crater was named after him on the moon and another on Mars.
