Cartographic work by Michael Zeiler, ESRI
These maps were prepared by Michael Zeiler of ESRI using ArcGIS professional geographic information system (GIS) software with data provided by NASA/GSFC Fred Espenak, JAXA Kaguya reduced by Dave Herald, and Eclipse-Chasers Bill Kramer and Xavier Jubier. Click on a map name to download, view, and print the PDF file. These files print beautifully on regular notebook sized paper and show the eclipse path at regular intervals of duration against the general terrain highlighting major towns, cities, and highways.
The details about the data used to prepare these maps can be found in the title boxes of each map. This was a group effort managed by Michael Zeiler at ESRI. If you want to make cool maps like these, check out their web site.
To download a map file, press the "right click" button and pick "Save as" or "Download" option. To view/print a print a map just select it.
Maps are PDF (download viewer) and JPG files, suitable for printing. 1-5mb in size.

Key to the TSE2010 map names:
TSE2010_[UN|KH]_[DETAIL|numbers]_name.[pdf|jpg]
- UN = uncorrected for lunar limb
- KH = correct for lunar limb using data supplied by the Kaguya mission and refined by Dave Herald
- DETAIL = close up view
- numbers = latitude range of map
- name = geographic name, if any
- pdf = Adobe Portable Document Format
- jpg = Graphic JPEG
The accuracy of the calculations involved results in slight errors that are visible in the duration lines on the maps. Near the northern and southern edges of the path the durations vary the most when the correction routines are applied. This is due to the limited precision of the data available as well as the extreme variation in the lunar profile at those positions (the southern part of the moon is quite rough). As time goes forward we hope to improve the prediction models and data resulting in smoother duration lines. Your feedback is helpful. We need timing information, GPS coordinates, and if possible - bead comparisons to better improve the calculations. |
