December 4, 2002 Total Solar Eclipse - Both gold and silver medals were minted in South Africa and in two sizes. This is a 1/10th ounce gold medal made of 99.9% pure gold. Proof strikes with mirror finished surfaces and frosted devices on both sides. A very limited mint run was made with gold and silver from South African mines. The dies were created by Sam Lamon of Lamon Jewelers in Musina, South Africa, a town that lay in the path of the eclipse central line. The actual sculpture work of the die was done by Linda Lotriet of Johannesburg, South Africa.
The front side of the medal shows the continent of Africa with an Elephant Head and a depiction of the sun and moon. The words South Africa and 4 December are presented around the outside of the field.
